In a controversy over the Arjuna Award after being nominated by the National Federation, Indian men's hockey team defender Harmanpreet Singh said on Thursday that his colleagues played a huge role in making him a success.

Hockey India on Tuesday nominated Harmanpreet and women's team members Vandana Kataria and Monica Malik for the Arjuna Award, while Rani Rampal recommended the women's captain for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Sports Honors.

Harmanpreet is part of the team that won the FIH Olympic Qualifier against Russia last year.

He said, 'I am very happy with the way I have been supporting the team for the past several years. However, I was able to come up with things only because of the way I support my teammates, ”he told Hockey India.

Hockey is a team sport and we make sure that we all contribute to the cause of the team in some way. When we make a goal, we are not only a goal scorer who takes credit but is loyal to the whole team effort. "

He said he was very happy to hear the news.

Singh acknowledged his support for Hockey India for some years.

I am very happy to know that Rani Rajiv Gandhi has been selected for the Khel Ratna Award, the Vandana and Monica Arjuna Award.

"He's made some great performances in recent times and I want to congratulate him."

Dragflick sensation played a part in the team's winning performance at the FIH Series Finals in Odisha.

At the Tokyo Olympic Test event, he led India to victory in the absence of Manpreet Singh, who rested on the occasion.

The 24-year-old said the team's biggest achievement last year was to win a place in the now deferred Tokyo Olympics.

"It was amazing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in front of our domestic audience last year. I will always cherish the memory. The balance on our side has been great and everyone has taken the pin to make the tournament memorable.

“Now, with great results, we will give everything to come to the Olympics next year. This is our only goal at the moment and we are all ready for the challenge. After we played our first match in Tokyo, we were pretty good. "
