US commanders said US warplanes intercepted four Russian reconnaissance aircraft on Saturday near Alaska.

Russian Tu-142 is located 65 nautical miles south of Alaska's Aleutian Island chain and has been "alerted" for eight hours in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

But the North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) said on Twitter that they remain in international airspace and have not entered the US or Canadian airspace.

ADIZ is a perimeter in which one or more Allied air forces monitor air traffic, giving them additional time to respond to enemy action.

The US has established these four regions, but a dozen or so other countries have established their own.

This is the fourth time this month that American aircraft have intercepted Russian aircraft near Alaska.

On May 29, the Russian Defense Ministry published images of two US B-1 bombers that intercepted Russia after flying over the Baltic and Black Seas near Russia.
