Turkish football season resumes after almost three months of suspension

Turkey's top soccer league will reopen on Friday with two matches played without fans following nearly three months of suspension due to a coronavirus outbreak.

Turkey has discontinued its football, basketball, and volleyball leagues on March 17 due to the epidemic. The Turkish Football Federation last month said the Super Lig would end on July 26 after the clubs completed their remaining eight matches.

League leaders Trabzonspor will travel to Izmir, Goztepe, and Fenerbahce host Kaiserisorp in Istanbul, with two matches starting at 1800 GMT.

Three Super Lig matches will take place on both Saturday and Sunday, one of which ends the first week of the competition, which will resume on Monday.

The virus has so far killed 4,763 people in Turkey, with about 175,000 cases confirmed. Despite concerns over second-generation infections, the government has withdrawn almost all preventive measures since June 1.
