China has denied reports that it is seeking to establish a military base in Kenya as part of a strategy to expand its reach to Africa.
The Pentagon has accused Congress in its
annual report on China's military that Beijing is monitoring military logistics
bases in a dozen African countries, including Kenya and neighboring Tanzania.
The Chinese embassy in Nairobi on Monday
rejected the Pentagon's report, calling it "propaganda."
"The information is completely
incorrect," said Xueqing Huang, chief of the information and public
affairs department at the Chinese embassy in Kenya.
"His (Pentagon's) latest report is
tantamount to ignoring past facts and exacerbating prejudice."
Ms. Xueqing added: "A spokesman for
the Chinese MFA [Ministry of Foreign Affairs] has urged them to stop issuing
irresponsible reports year after year, and 'in line with the outdated Cold War
mentality and zero. Give up the mentality.
The Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) did not
react to the Pentagon report when it came under pressure, despite promising to
do so after reviewing it.
A Pentagon report claims that China may
have already begun talks with Nairobi to establish a military base in Kenya.
"The People's Republic of China has
identified locations for PLA (People's Liberation Army) military supplies to
Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the United Arab
Emirates, Kenya, Seychelles, Tanzania, Angola and Tajikistan. Understood Facilities,
“the Pentagon said in its annual report released on Tuesday last year.
He said the PRC may have already moved
beyond Namibia, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands. Leading areas of the PLA's
plan are the Strait of Hormuz from China, Africa, and the Pacific Islands along
the SLOC (Lines of Communication).
