Iraq reopened its land borders, restaurants, hotels and brought back sporting events without spectators on Monday, the prime minister said Monday, adding that it had recorded the highest daily increase in corona virus infections.
Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said in
a statement that the land crossing would be open for trade only to meet the
needs of the local market. He added that restaurants and five-star hotels
should follow public health guidelines.
He said that sports events would resume
from September 12. Government agencies can now re-employ 50% of their
employees.
The Ministry of Health said that the
number of coronavirus infections in Iraq on Friday was the highest daily
increase in 5,036 cases as Iraqis continue to enforce lockdown laws.
The Ministry of Health said that 4,314 new
cases were recorded’ on Monday, with 77 deaths, bringing the total number of
cases to 264,684 and the total deaths to 7,589.
Kadhimi said the Election Commission would
be allowed’ to open voter registration centers and its employees would be
exempted’ from the curfew.
The prime minister took over as the third
head of government in a 10-week period of chaos in May, after months of unrest
in a country fed up with Islamist militants, corruption and economic collapse.
He was appointed’ head of the government
responsible for holding early elections, a key demand of anti-government
protesters who staged large-scale demonstrations last month, and called a
