The Kremlin said, President Vladimir Putin on Friday called for an agreement between Russia and the United States to guarantee cyber-interference in each other's elections and internal affairs.
In a statement issued ahead of the
November 3 US presidential election, Putin called for a "restoration"
between Russia and the United States and said he wanted an agreement between
the two countries to prevent cyberspace.
Moscow's relations with Washington have
come closer and closer in the post-Cold War elections. U.S. intelligence
agencies have concluded that Moscow interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential
election in a bid to favor Donald Trump, including hacking into the campaign of
his rival, Hillary Clinton. Moscow denies the allegations.
Trump is currently campaigning against
Democrat Joe Biden.
"One of the most important strategic
challenges of our time is the threat of a large-scale confrontation in the
digital realm," Putin said in a Kremlin statement.
"We would like to appeal once again
to the United States for approval of a comprehensive program of practical steps
to restore our relationship in the use of information and communication
technology (ICT)," the Kremlin said. "
