China's defense ministry on Sunday slammed a report critical of the United States' military intentions, saying it posed the greatest threat to international peace and security.
The statement came after the Defense Department released its
annual report to Congress on September 2 on the Chinese military's progress and
goals, which it said had "serious implications for the security of an

Defense Ministry spokesman Colonel Wu Qian called the report a
"distortion" of China's goals and the relationship between the
People's Liberation Army and China's 1.4 billion people.

Over the past two decades, US operations in Iraq, Syria, Libya
and other countries have killed more than 800,000 people and displaced
millions, Kian said.

The more than 150-page, Defense Department report examines the
PLA's technical capabilities, ideas, and ultimate goals for China's military

Much of the report was devoted to analyzing China's strategy

It also surveyed areas where the world's largest standing army,
the 2 million-member PLA, overcame a US ship, including the size of its own

The report said that China has also developed a large arsenal of
ground-based ballistic and cruise missiles, including the world's largest

This year's report comes at a time when the trade, technology,
