A federal judge on Sunday overturned a Trump administration order banning the popular video-sharing app TikTok from US smartphone app stores.
A more comprehensive ban is set for
November, about a week after the presidential election. The U.S. District Court
for the District of Columbia, Judge Carl Nichols later refused to suspend the
ban.
The decision led to an emergency hearing
Sunday morning in which Tick Tick's lawyers argued that the management's ban on
the App Store violated the company's First Amendment rights and caused
irreparable damage to the business.
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump
announced that TikTok was a threat to national security and that he should
either sell his US operations to US companies or suspend the country.
They also banned China's WeChat app from
the App Stores, but over the weekend, a California judge lifted the ban. In
that case, according to NPR, the judge said the Trump administration presented
"little evidence" to support the belief that Chinese apps were a
threat to national security.
Tik Tok told NPR that he was happy with
the court's decision.
"We will continue to defend our
rights for the benefit of our community and employees. At the same time, we
will continue our ongoing negotiations with the government to reverse our
proposal, which the President announced last weekend." Turned into an
agreement with initial approval. "
