According to a New York Times report, Donald Trump has not paid income tax in 10 of the last 15 years.
Citing tax return figures, the paper also
claims that the US president paid only 750 (590 paid) in federal income tax in
2016, the year he was elected, and before his inauguration. This figure again
in the year.
The claims come just weeks before a
disputed election, with early voting underway.
When asked about the report in his daily
briefing, Mr. Trump said: "It's totally fake news, made up, fake.
"Actually, I paid taxes."
Mr. Trump insisted his tax details would
be released’ when the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) completes its audit.
Mr. Trump added: "He has been under
investigation for some time. The IRS treats me very badly."
"Most, if not all, facts seem
wrong," a Trump organization lawyer told the newspaper.
In a statement, he said the president had
"paid tens of millions of dollars in personal taxes to the federal
government, including millions of dollars in personal taxes since his candidacy
was announced in 2015."
A New York Times report claims that Mr.
Trump managed to minimize his tax bill by reporting huge losses in his business
empire.
It said it claimed losses of .4 47.4
million (37 37.1 million) in 2018, despite claiming at least 43 434.9 million (40,340.7
million) in a financial disclosure in 2018.
The US president's refusal to issue his
own tax has been a departure from standard practice for presidential
candidates.
He is currently in a legal battle with New
York City prosecutors and congressional Democrats seeking his return.
During the 2016 presidential debate
against Hillary Clinton, Mrs. Clinton said that Mr. Trump may not have been
filing his tax returns because he had not paid anything in federal taxes.
Mr. Trump interrupted them, saying:
"It's a warning to me."
