British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday announced the renewal of some lockdown measures to curb the growing corona virus.
The new restrictions include the closure
of pubs and restaurants from 10 a.m. onwards. By 5:00 p.m., according to the
Associated Press. Johnson also called on residents who are eligible to work
from home to do so, according to the News Service, which added that masks would
be needed’ in public transportation and taxis, and the age of marriage. It will
be limited to 15 people instead of 30.
"This is the moment when we have to
work," Johnson said.
Corona virus cases have been on the rise
in the United States in recent weeks, with the government reporting 4,300 new
infections on Monday. The AP noted that this is the highest number since May.
Although the United States has introduced new lockdown measures as the number
of cases has increased, these measures are still lower than those imposed in
March, when the population was largely confined’ to their homes.
The official death toll in the UK stood at
41,877 as of Tuesday, the highest in Europe. Polling shows that the lockdown
measure has the support of the majority, but its confidence in government
messaging has waned.
Jennifer Cole, a biologist at the
University of Royal Holloway, told the AP: Let's go. ““In short, the government
is saying, 'Think for yourself, be careful and places can be open.' It's a
carrot to encourage responsible behavior. "
Despite a gradual increase in summer,
cases are now doubling every week, Chief Medical Officer Chris White said in a
televised briefing. The rate of infection is increasing in the age groups, he
added. Last week, the U.S. average of its daily seven-day death toll was 21.
"It's not someone else's problem,
it's our problem," White said, according to the AP.
