Israel will oppose any US sale of F-35 fighter jets to Qatar, Israel's intelligence minister said Sunday, referring to the need to maintain Israeli military supremacy in the region.
Intelligence Minister Eli Cohen made the
remarks on Israeli military radio when asked about a Reuters report that Qatar
had secretly made a formal request to Washington to buy F-35 fighter jets.
Asked whether Israel would oppose such a
sale, Cohen said: "The answer is yes. Our security and military
superiority in the region are the most important things to us. Our region has
not yet become Switzerland. Is."
Qatar's request follows an August agreement
between the United States and the United Arab Emirates in which Washington
approved the normalization of diplomatic relations with the Gulf state under
the Ibrahim Accord under a US agreement to buy F-35s Had considered Israel
