The UEFA has rejected plans to hold Euro 2020 in Russia amid ongoing sanctions over the coronavirus epidemic.
The
European Championships were called’ off a year later in March after the
outbreak of Covid 19, which has caused more than 1.2 million deaths worldwide
to date.
The
24-team tournament was originally scheduled to take place in 12 different
countries, with Bilbao, Amsterdam, Baku, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen,
Dublin, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome, and St. Petersburg ready to host.
However,
news of a possible change in the format surfaced this week, with the UEFA
proposing to compete in Russia, as the leading candidate to successfully host
the 2018 World Cup final. Has surfaced.
It
is understood’ that reforms on travel restrictions and quarantine laws on the
continents will have to be pushed forward, as several countries are currently
hosting games in lockdown as measures are being taken to curb the spread of the
corona virus.
However,
UEFA has insisted that deviations from the pre-determined format for Euro 2020
are not being considered’ and plans to move forward include welcoming
supporters back to the stadium.
A
UEFA spokesperson told SID: "UEFA's efforts are currently focused on
planning tournaments with spectators in all 12 venues.
The
European Championships start on June 11, 2021, with the first match of the
group between Italy and Turkey starting at the Studio Olimpico in Rome.
Meanwhile,
the final is scheduled’ to take place on July 11, 2021, at Wembley Stadium in
London, as the UEFA, celebrates its 60th anniversary.
Portugal
won the trophy for the first time in its history in 2016, beating France 1-0
after extra time in the showpiece event.
Both
sides will be among the favorites to win the tournament, along with Germany,
Italy, Spain, Belgium, and England, while the UEFA National League will discuss
all countries from next year until action begins.
Portugal
won the inaugural National League in 2019 with a 1-0 victory over the
Netherlands and the latest campaign will continue until the international
break next week.
