Authorities in Istanbul on Saturday announced a ban on weddings and other events in Turkey's largest city as the number of daily coronavirus and deaths across the country reached its highest level in more than two months.

The Istanbul governor's office said indoor weddings, engagement parties and circumcision ceremonies would be banned’ by Monday. It says children and people over the age of 60 will be barred’ from outdoor events that are still ahead.

The bans were issued just hours before Health Minister Fahrettin  Koca said 1,549 new cases of the coronavirus had been diagnosed in Turkey, the most daily since mid-June. The highest death toll since mid-May was 29, he said.

"The number of patients in critical condition is steadily rising. We can't take steps to control the epidemic," Koca said in a tweet.
