Britain, France and Germany said on Friday that UN sanctions on Iran would continue after September 20.
In a letter to the UN Security Council,
European countries said any decision to overturn UN sanctions would be
"without legal effect".
The countries said, "We have worked
tirelessly to secure the nuclear deal and are committed to doing so."
The Trump administration has not yet
commented on the move by Britain, France and Germany.
Washington is trying to overturn sanctions
In August, the United States launched a
controversial process aimed at overturning UN sanctions on Iran. The lifting of
sanctions will also prevent the traditional arms embargo on Iran from expiring
on October 18.
Less than a week after the UN Security Council
rejected the US bid, the 15-member body lacks consensus. More than a dozen
members of the council believe Washington's move is null and void because US
President Donald Trump has pulled his country out of a nuclear deal with Iran
in 2018.
However, the United States has insisted on
its legal right to mobilize the withdrawal of sanctions using a controversial
method called "snapback".
Trump has issued an executive order in the
coming days to impose US sanctions on Iran over alleged violations of the UN
arms embargo, according to a Reuters report citing unnamed sources. What do you
intend to do?
