On Sunday, his office said the son-in-law of former Lebanese Foreign Minister and President Michel Aoun had tested positive for the corona virus.
A statement from his office said, "Gibran Basil, who is
also the leader of the Christian Free Patriotic Movement party, will be
separated until he recovers. He added that the level of infection is
still" low and Is acceptable.
The announcement comes amid a horrific rise in coronavirus
cases in Lebanon, with a record number being registered’ almost every day last
week.
The Ministry of Health on Saturday confirmed 122 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of infections in Lebanon to 33,162.
Since the first case came to light in late February, the government has
recorded 317 deaths in Cove 19.
It was not immediately clear when Basel, 50, saw his
father-in-law, the president, for the last time.
Health Minister Hamad Hassan has recommended an overall lockdown
for two weeks to stem the rise in daily detected’ infections, but it will be
difficult for authorities to impose another lockdown during the extraordinary
economic downturn.
Business in Lebanon began to pick up after the pool was eased’
and the country's only international airport reopened in early July. The rise
came after a major bomb blast at the Beirut port on August 4 killed 193 people,
injured at least 6,500 and destroyed most of the city.
The bomber struck shortly afternoon in front of a Beirut
hospital, killing at least two people and wounding dozens more.
