A powerful bomb blast near an Islamic seminary on the outskirts of the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar killed at least seven children, injured 70 on Tuesday morning, police, and a hospital spokesperson said. A police and hospital spokesperson said.
Police Officer Waqar Azeem said the bombing took
place while a cleric was lecturing on Islamic teachings in the main hall of
Jamia Zubairia Madrassa. He said a preliminary investigation revealed that the
bomb had exploded minutes after someone dropped the bag at the madrassa.
The condition of several injured is critical, and
hospital officials fear the death toll could rise further.
Peshawar is the provincial capital of Pakistan's
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan. The province has been the
scene of such militant attacks in recent years, but sectarian violence has
killed or injured people in mosques or madrassas across Pakistan.
The latest attack comes two days after a bomb
blast in the southwestern city of Quetta.
