The prime minister of the Australian state of Victoria has called on citizens to "keep their way" after flooding of beaches and parks over the weekend in violation of lockdown laws.
Victoria, which is experiencing a rapid
winter outbreak of coronavirus, relaxed lockdown regulations last weekend but
still allowed only five people from two families to gather outside.
On Saturday, many people ignored the rules
and crowds in parks and beaches, forcing State Premier Daniel Andrews to remind
Victorians not to be selfish and to maintain physical distance.
Only 12 new coronavirus cases and one
death occurred in Victoria on Sunday, which is good for winter peaks.
The deceased was an elderly resident of an
elderly care facility who had spread an epidemic.
"We're so close," Andrews said.
"Let none of us do anything that
harms the most positive numbers. Once we reduce them, we can keep them low, and
if we are still a fool or something ourselves. If not, we can reopen.
Andrews said Victoria's situation was
"critical" as the state moved toward more relaxation of lockdown
laws.
"It's sunny, yes, and people like to
go to the beach when it's sunny, but there's a global epidemic," he said.
"Definitely, there's a lot of desire
to see this thing, to beat it, and to have a summer and coveted normal
Christmas and 2021."
