China has rejected a new US invitation to participate in nuclear talks

China on Friday rejected a new US invitation to participate in arms control talks with Russia, complaining that Washington continues to "paste" Beijing over the issue.

The Donald Trump administration has asked the United States to negotiate with China's successors for a new START agreement between the superpowers of the two Cold War eras and Russia's nuclear war.

Beijing said it would join the talks if the United States reduced its arsenal to match China's very small nuclear defenses, allowing Washington to issue a new invitation to talks once again on Thursday.

However, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian poured cold water on the idea during a press conference on Friday.

"China's opposition to the so-called tripartite arms control talks is very clear," he said.

"However, the United States continues to defeat China to undermine China's position."

Zhao said Washington's proposal for tripartite talks was "not serious or heartfelt", in response to Russia 's call for an extension of the deal, further reducing its own nuclear arsenal.
