The Bulgarian president has called for the resignation of a "mafia-style" government

Bulgarian President Ruman Radev has called on the country's central-right government to resign on Saturday, accusing him of corruption and "mafia role".

In a nationally aired speech, Radev said the resignation of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov's government was the only way to reduce political tensions that had intensified public protests across Bulgaria. He called on the country's chief prosecutor, Ivan Gechev, to step down.

"Bulgarians of various ages and political affiliations are demanding the restoration of the rule of law and basic civil liberties, which have been systematically violated in previous years," he said.

“Anger is deep, it has accumulated over the years and cannot be suppressed with fear and force,” Radev said.

Attack on the President's Office

His remarks came after a police raid on the president's headquarters this week and the arrest of two of his colleagues.

Radhe, the country's chief prosecutor, accused him of being unconstitutional and tweeted that the president had violated judicial independence and was trying to put pressure on the prosecution office.

Radev tried to block Gechev's appointment last year amid public outrage that he would work hard to curb rampant corruption in the country.

Rodeo has pursued constitutional changes on the boundaries of power and better accountability to the office of the Chief Prosecutor.

Political tensions provoke opposition to the show

In the aftermath of the attack, thousands of protesters took to the streets of the capital, Sofia, to denounce the search as an attack on the socialist-backed Rade. He accused the government of corruption and links to criminal groups.

On Saturday, hundreds of people protested against corruption at a beach in the Black Sea, especially for a political official who supported Prime Minister Borisov.

On Friday night, 18 people were arrested during protests in Sofia, while two protesters and four police officers were injured.

Borisov has been in power since 2009, and his third term ends in March next year.
