Beyoncé has issued a fervent appeal calling for an end to "unconscious savagery" in Nigeria amid ongoing protests over a police unit known as the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Demonstrations
against the SARS are taking place in the West African country and around the
world, which has become notorious for its allegations of atrocities and
extortion.
In
a post on Instagram on Tuesday night, the 39-year-old star admitted that he was
heartbroken to see the senseless barbarism taking place in Nigeria, insisting:
"The stork must end."
"We
are working in partnership with youth organizations to support protesters for
change," the formation hitmaker continued. We are partnering with the
Alliance to provide emergency health care, food and shelter. For our Nigerian
sisters and brothers, we stand by you.
In
recent weeks, protesters have taken to the streets daily in protest of police
brutality in Lagos, with stars including John Boyega; Chance the Rapper, and Burna
Boy supporting the opposition.
President
Mohammad Buhari dissolved the unit on October 11, but protesters have called
for more changes in the security forces as well as reforms in the way the
country is’ run.
Following
the protests, officials imposed a curfew outside the city of Lagos as anti-riot
personnel struggled to contain violence in the region.
