Hungary's the foreign minister has tested positive for the coronavirus in Thailand, the state's health minister said on Wednesday when he withdrew from a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Peter
Szijjarto paid a one-day official visit on Tuesday to sign civil aviation,
agriculture and water management agreements, as well as to reopen an embassy
after a 25-year hiatus.
His
picture was shown’ in a meeting with Hun Sen, where he did not distance himself
socially or wear a mask.
The
Minister also met with his Cambodian counterpart and shook hands with a group
of other ministers.
On
Tuesday night, Szijjarto arrived in Bangkok and was rushed’ to hospital after
testing positive for the virus.
Thai
Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters after visiting Szijjarto at
the Bamrasnaradura Institute of Infectious Diseases on Wednesday that tests
showed he had Covid 19, but no symptoms.
"Everyone
experienced it negatively."
Cambodian
scheduled meetings in the Thai capital have been canceled’ and Hungary has been
ordered’ to send an additional plane apart from its crew.
Cambodian
officials in Bangkok and the Hungarian embassy did not immediately respond to
requests for comment.
In
the early weeks of the epidemic, Beijing's staunch ally Hun Sen refused to wear
a mask from China or keep Cambodia's borders close to China.
But
as matters escalated across Europe and the United States, the country banned
foreign tourists - although never from the Chinese market - and Hun Sen urged
people to wear the Dawn mask. The lyrics changed.
Most
of the country has been infected’ with the virus, with less than 300 cases
reported and no deaths reported.
