Vice President-elect Kamala, Harris spoke to a crowd of supporters in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday night. Here is what he said.
Good
evening.
Congressman
John Lewis wrote before his death: "Democracy is not a state. It is an
act.
And
that meant that American democracy was not’ guaranteed.
It
is as strong as our willingness to fight it, to protect it and never to despise
it.
And
we need a struggle to protect our democracy.
It
takes sacrifice. There is happiness and progress.
Because
we have the power to create a better future for the people.
And
when our democracy was on the ballot in this election, the very soul of America
was in danger, and the world was watching, you started a new day for America.
For
our campaign staff and volunteers, this extraordinary team. Thank you for
bringing more people into the democratic process than ever before and for
making this victory possible.
To
our country's election workers and election officials who have worked
tirelessly to ensure that every vote is counted’ - our nation is grateful to
you for protecting the integrity of our democracy.
And
for the American people who make up our beautiful country - thank you for
changing the record number to make your voices heard.
I
know times have been challenging, especially over the last several months.
Grief,
sorrow and pain. Anxiety and struggle.
But
we have also seen your courage, your resilience, and your generosity of spirit.
For
4 years, you marched and organized for equality and justice, our lives and our
planet.
And
then, you voted. You gave a clear message.
You
chose hope, unity, politeness, science, and, yes, truth.
You
chose Biden as the next president of the United States.
Which
is healing. One unit An experienced and strong hand.
A
person who experiences his own loss gives him a sense of purpose that will help
him regain his sense of purpose as a nation.
And
a man with a big heart who gives up.
It's
their love, which will be the wonderful first lady.
She
loves Hunter, Ashley, her grandchildren, and the entire Biden family.
And
when I first met Joe as vice president, I really knew him as the father who
loved my dear friend Beau, whom we remember here today.
To
my husband Doug, our children Cole and Ellie, my sister Maya, and our whole
family - I love you more than I can express.
We
are very grateful to Joe and Jill for welcoming our family on this incredible
journey.
And
most responsible for my presence here today is this woman - my mother, North
Gopalan Harris, who has always been in our hearts.
When
she came here from India at the age of 19, she probably didn't even imagine it
at that moment.
But
she believed so deeply in an America that such a moment was possible.
So,
I'm thinking about it and the race of women - black women.
Native
American women in the history of Asian, White, Latina, and our entire nation
who paved the way for this moment tonight.
Women
who have fought and sacrificed so much for equality, freedom and justice for
all, including black women, who are often overlooked, but often prove that they
are our democracy Are the backbone of.
All
the women who have worked for more than a century to protect and preserve the
right to vote: 100 years ago with the 19th Amendment, 55 years ago with the
Voting Rights Act, and now, in 2020, in our country With a new generation of
women who exercised their right to vote and continued to fight for their basic
right to vote and be heard.
Tonight,
as I reflect on their struggles, their determination, and the power of their
vision - to see how much of what has been done’ can be a burden - I stand on
their shoulders.
And
what a testament to Joe's role that he had the courage to break through the
biggest barriers in our country and elect a woman as his vice president.
But
while I am the first woman in this office, I will not be the last.
Because
every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a land of possibilities.
And
for the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has
sent you a clear message:
Dream
with desire, guide with certainty, and see yourself in a way that others may
not see you, because they have never seen you before.
And
we will appreciate your every move.
For
the American people:
No
matter who you vote for, I'll try to be the vice president who was President
Obama - loyal, honest and willing, waking up every day thinking about you and
your family. Free Because now the real work begins.
Hard
work, essential work, good work
Essential
work to save lives and defeat this epidemic.
To
rebuild our economy so that it works for the people who work
To
eradicate systemic racism in our justice system and society.
To
deal with the climate crisis l.
Unite
your country and heal the soul of your nation.
The
way forward will not be easy.
But
America is ready. And so are I.
We
have chosen a president who represents us best.
A
leader will respect the world and our children can find it.
A
Commander-in-Chief who will respect our troops and keep our country safe.
And
a president for all Americans.
It
is now a great honor for me to be elected’ President of the United States of
America, who introduced Biden.
