US President Donald Trump said in a surprise statement on Thursday that Israel and the United Arab Emirates had reached a peace agreement.
Trump tweeted that normalizing relations
between the UAE and Israel was a "huge success" and said it was
"a historic peace deal between our two great friends."
Speaking to reporters later, Trump
suggested that victories that are more diplomatic be expected’ between Israel
and its Muslim neighbors in the region.
“Things are happening that I can’t talk
about,” he said.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompey
described it as "a historic day and an important step towards peace in the
Middle East."
"The United States believes this bold
move is the first in a series of agreements to end 72 years of hostility in the
region," Pompeo said.
Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said in a
joint statement on Thursday that they had "agreed to fully normalize
relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates". "
Representatives of Israel and the UAE will
meet in the coming weeks to conclude bilateral agreements on investment,
tourism, direct flights, security, and the establishment of mutual embassies.
"At the request of President Trump,
with the support of the United Arab Emirates, the President of Israel will
cease to declare sovereignty over the territories specified in the Vision for
Peace and will now focus on efforts to expand relations with other countries in
the Arab and Muslim world."
"The United States, Israel and the
United Arab Emirates are confident that they can achieve additional diplomatic
success with other countries and work together to achieve this goal," he
said.
