President Donald Trump on Friday announced an agreement to establish full diplomatic relations between Israel and Bahrain.
Bahrain, along with Israel and the United
Arab Emirates, will attend the tripartite signing ceremony at the White House
on Tuesday.
Addressing the Oval Office on Friday
afternoon, Trump said it was indeed a historic day.
While agreeing to work with the UAE to
normalize relations with Israel, Trump called it "an unimaginable regional
change."
The president added that the date of the
announcement was "amazing" but "it is as interesting as
9/11."
Trump suggested that a return to normalcy
between Israel and other Arab countries could somehow persuade the Palestinians
to join.
"We think you have to join most of
the countries and you put the Palestinians in a very good position. They want
to come in. They want to come in because they have all their friends
inside," Trump said. Said
However, the agreement further affects the
Palestinians' demand to refrain from normalizing relations with Israel before resolving
their dispute with the Palestinians.
Like the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain has
never competed with Israel.
