Health Minister says Ethiopia will receive 300,000 doses of Sinopharm COVID-19 shot

Ethiopia said on Monday it would receive a dose of 300,000 Covid 19 vaccines from China's state-backed China National Pharmaceutical Group (VENOFER) on Tuesday.

Health Minister Lia Tdisi told Reuters in a text message that the Sinopharm dose was the first pill Ethiopia had acquired out of the global distribution of the CoVAX vaccine.


Ethiopia is struggling to eradicate the shots and infections that have spread.


According to the Ministry of Health, there has been a 26% increase in coronavirus infections and an 18% increase in deaths in the past month. On Thursday, the African CDC, which controls diseases in Africa, said Ethiopia had seen the newest cases in the last week of any country on the continent.


With a population of over 110 million, the Horn of Africa country has recorded 200,563 infections and 2,801 deaths since its first case was announced in March last year.


On Monday, Johnson and Johnson said they had agreed to supply 400 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccine to the African Union (AU) from the third quarter of 2021.


On March 7, Ethiopia received approximately 2.2 million doses of the Aster Zeniza vaccine through Quax.


In February, the minister said Ethiopia was expected to be vaccinated
